The WAS is led by a 40-hour/week, paid director. The director reports directly to the Town Manager and is advised by a slate of WAS officers. The WAS has provided service to Alna, Edgecomb and Westport for nearly three decades without charge with the exception of contributions in recent years for paramedic training and the replacement of one ambulance.
As of January 2009, the service has 11 Paramedics, 5 Intermediate EMT's, 10 Basic EMT's, and 6 CPR/Drivers for a total of 32 members. Vehicles and major pieces of equipment include a 2003 Ford Wheeled Coach Ambulance, a 2006 Ford PL Custom Ambulance and a Boat and Trailer.
The increased paramedicine-degree licensure of some members in recent years allows the service to deliver pharmacology and advanced patient-care in the field. The advanced services now delivered by the service meet an important need in the community, but also require ongoing advanced training, reporting and materials purchases.
